Spruce and Walnut - one of my favorite combinations. A few pics of build I finished last month for my friend Paul.
For this build, Paul wanted something unique for the rosette and we decided on a carved “crown of thorns” design. I ruined one top trying to accomplish this and took about three test tries to get it right, but in the end it came out nice. It is a very subtle effect but the shadows shift at different angles giving a nice 3d effect.
Although most of the building was fairly standard, I did try a new technique of reinforcing some of the major structural braces with carbon fiber. This allows for a lighter but stiffer brace. This is a technique used by Trevor Gore who has introduce a number of innovations to modern guitar building.
We also did the upper “scoop bevel” and the lower arm bevel.
The neck is my standard 3 ply lamination but this time with a curly maple core. PPPPPPPPow!
A few more pics…. The Walnut set Paul picked out it is stellar.
