#6 Hight Finish Pics

Hight #6 Finish Pics | Happy New Year to you all! Here are a few pics of the last build that my buddy Daniel Hight pulled together for his brother Ben. This build and the one before - the Steve McIntyre build - turned out better than my best expectations. Read on through to the end and there is a short video of Ben playing his new hand-did guitar.

This one is another Mahogany Top with walnut back and sides. The wood combo makes for a very nice balanced guitar. It is also a multi-scale/fan-fret - 26.25 inch scale length on the bottom, 25.25 inch scale length on the top.

It is so hard to capture the detail of the wood in these pics. The mahogany is beautiful golden honey color with the translucent "silking" running through the grain.

The Walnut is very nicely figure on the sides as well. I am still doing an "open pore" finish with leaves the wood grain exposed. I think this makes the guitar sound more "woody." It also accentuates the hand-did reality of the guitar.

This wood combo is more monotone overall, but all the fine details like the purfling and the curly Koa really pop when viewed up close. A very classy look.

The binding on this one is a curly Koa with a suble 3/32" black-white-black purfling line.

I have included this next picture for one reason: look at the frets. You can see the strings  being reflected in the near mirror hand-polished surface. I love seeing the fingerboard and the frets when they are both polished up and gleaming. It won't stay that way long, but it is cool while it is.

Again, another pinless bridge design. Very similar to the Steve Mc guitar with a different shape. Still working on this design but so far, this one works very well.

A little "bling" in the abalone rosette with 3/32 b-w-b purfling.

The soundhole is also bound with the same 3/32" purfling.

I did a different head stock design on this one and I think this basic shape is going to be my standard from here on. It allows me to show off the magnetic truss rod cover.

The back of the headstock is laminated with Sycamore and Rosewood. I dig the way the Sycamore blends into the Maple lamination in the neck. The tuners are Gotoh M6 style - very classy look with the gold and black.

The neck heel is carved a little different on this one, combining a traditional point with a little more modern flattened out look.

The neck is a three piece laminate, khaya - hard maple - khaya. Makes for a strong, stable neck and it looks cool too.

And a few more pics of that gorgeous back with the curly Koa center strip. I really like the walnut. Just bought me a set for a build this year; I can't let everyone else have all my best guitars.

In the meantime, Daniel sent a short video of Ben playing his new hand-did and it looks like he is digging it.
