The Hypocrite

My family knows that I HATE glitter - It was outlawed in our house years ago… But sometimes, you just got to be a hypocrite.

Last couple of months, been thinking about guitars and things and I have liked style wise, but never really tried out. This model is another push into new old ideas. I have never had a guitar with a Bigsby style trem. Found a cheap knock-off to give it a try. Also went back to the lipstick style pickups I used on the Larry Chicken which were humbuckers. I wanted to try out the single coils for this one. They have that Danelectro, retro vibe, 50’s space age stuff…. And they are very “jangly.”

I have been testing out some new finish options and got some color-shift, iridescent paints and also glitter-sparkle top coats. My daughters were very quick to point out my hypocrisy. The body is stained red then sprayed with the glitter. This was a combo of “gold” and “magic.” Yeah, glam… sparklicious

Recently, I saw a video talking about Robert Smith’s guitars (The Cure). They were showing a Fender Bass VII which I had never heard of. That model has three single coils with a switch for each pickup to turn them on and off. I have seen other versions of this, and decided that this type of wiring would be great for this model. The three single coil config is my personal favorite and the switching options give 7 combinations. With all three pickups on, this baby is janglicious.

This one also has a chambered body which I have only done one other time on the Larry Chicken model. Most of the body above and below the middle cavity section is routed out, like a semi-hollow. For the top, I used a super cheap piece of Englemann Spruce, normally used on acoustics.

Again, some old style Hi-Fi looking knobs. The pickups are some “bargain” Guitar Fetish pickups - I have been impressed with every pickup I have tried from them.

Although I didn’t intend to head this direction on this build, this is what happened. As the build progressed, I kept thinking about those early 60s guitars that became associated with “surf” guitar music… maybe the glitter just got to me….
